Lagos to prosecute Yomi Fabiyi for contempt of court

Lagos Directorate of Public Prosecution(DPP) said it will commence the prosecution of Nollywood actor cum movie producer, Yomi Fabiyi for contempt of court over the production and airing of ‘Oko Iyabo.’

Its Director of Public Prosecution Olayinka Adeyemi told an Ikeja Special Offences Court that Fabiyi produced a movie based on the facts of a case that is still undergoing consideration in the court and was aired via the internet.

The DPP told the court that Yomi Fabiyi, a supporter of the embattled Baba Ijesha disregarded the directive of the judge on June 24th and revealed sensitive information on a case which is before the court.

The DPP on Monday, July 26 in court said; “Despite the warnings of this honourable court, an actor called Yomi Fabiyi went ahead and made a movie about the facts of this case.

“He used real names of the parties and witnesses in this matter in the movie. Our application is to exclude him, his privies, and his agents from proceedings in court.”

“He is not in court at the moment but his representatives may be in court. This is contempt of court and we intend to prosecute him and bring him before this court.”

The judge, Oluwatoyin Taiwo, responded and said the matter will be investigated.

She said; “This case is subjudice and you are not to be making videos and disparaging comments on social media. This needs to be investigated, let’s see whether it is true.

Although, one of Baba Ijesha’s defense counsels, Dada Awosika, argued that he has seen the movie and it has no relation to the judicial proceedings.

He stated: “The movie is about the controversy between two artists – Yomi Fabiyi and Iyabo Ojo” and they are not involved in the case.

Meanwhile, during the court proceeding, comedienne cum actress and foster mother of the complainant, Damilola Adekoya better known as Princess, gave a witness account of how she met and groomed Baba Ijesha.

Yoruba actress Iyabo Ojo and comedian, Gbenga Adeyinka were also in court during the proceedings to support Princess.

Yomi Fabiyi had re-enacted the scene where Baba Ijesha was caught on CCTV trying to molest the 14-year-old.

However, in the film, Fabiyi portrayed Baba Ijesha as the girl’s lover, a narrative which has met with mixed feelings and quite unacceptable by many.

He also named it ‘Oko Iyabo’ trolling Iyabo Ojo with whom he’s been at loggerheads ever since the issue broke.

He used real names as well such as the alleged victim foster mother’s name, Comedienne Princess.
