In the past nine months, 252 alleged drug dealers and traffickers have been taken into custody by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Edo State.
This was revealed on Thursday by Buba Wakawa, the state commander, through Assistant Commander Narcotic, who is in charge of advocacy and the media in Benin, Ondoimi Bebetu.
He claimed that between January and September, the suspects were apprehended.
He added that the legislation allowed the agency to counsel the detained suspects who were deemed users and that they were counseled before being returned to their loved ones.

He clarified that the agency coordinates with the army, police, DSS, and other agencies to conduct recurring raids in hotels and event venues throughout the state in order to combat drug traffickers.

He said, “From January till date, NDLEA has arrested 252 suspected drug traffickers and peddlers in the state. Some of them have been jailed, some are still in court, and others have been counseled.
“We go to hotels and recreational centers where young boys and girls hide to traffic drugs. The arrested suspects are usually questioned to identify those who are dealers, drug peddlers, and users.”

Despite the difficulties posed by the drug war in Edo State, he said the agency has been making every effort to reduce drug consumption and drug supply chains within the state.
“Some of the most popular drugs from these dealers are cannabis, cocaine, heroin, tramadol, colorado, and codeine syrup,” he continued. Tramadol is inhaled by the users, who also occasionally heat or chew the raw tablets while smoking the dried ones, he stated.
