The special adviser to President Buhari on media and publicity, Femi Adeshina, in a statement on Tuesday confirmed that the President renamed Professor Mahmood Yakubu as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
This second term which is supposed to last for five years is expected to be his last term with the institution and the President addressed this in a letter to the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.
Femi Adeshina also went further to explain that the President’s action is in line with Section 154 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
Notwithstanding, this nomination by the President needs approval from members of the upper chamber of the National Assembly to take effect.
“I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the nomination of Professor Mahmood Yakubu for appointment as Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a second and final term,” President Buhari stated in his letter.
Professor Mahmood Yakubu was first appointed by President Buhari to assume this position in November 2015, six months after he became president.
