A military court in Abuja has convicted Major General Olusegun Adeniyi, the former theatre commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, and demoted him by at least three years.
This was prompted by a video of Adeniyi that went viral, in which he was seen complaining about the lack of weapons for troops fighting Boko Haram insurgents.

The Major General was subsequently removed as commander of Operation Lafiya Dole and transferred to the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja.
He was later take to the army headquarters,also in Abuja, and made to face a court martial, a legal proceeding for military officers, which is similar to a civilian court trial.
The army, however, claimed Adeniyi’s redeployment was a routine exercise intended to reinvigorate the system.

On Monday, the military tribunal found Adeniyi guilty of violating military social media guidelines and ordered his immediate demotion by at least three years.
Adeniyi was prosecuted alongside his military aide,Tokunbo Obanla. Obanla was also found guilty and sentenced to 28 days in jail with hard labour.
According to Adeniyi, Obanla, was in possession of his phone at the time of the incident, and the latter confessed that he posted the video on social media in error.

Both convictions are subject to confirmation by the military board before it can take effect.
Meanwhile, Adeniyi’s lawyers have said that they would appeal the tribunal judgement before higher military authorities.
